Tips for writing your UCAS Personal Statement

Why write a UCAS? personal statement ?

In your dUCAS application formfor the United Kingdom, your personal statement will be a key element and the best way to distinguish yourself from thousands of other applicants. It’s an opportunity to express your motivation and interest in the subject and course you’re considering, and to talk about all the elements in your background that make you an ideal candidate for this course.

Your personal statement should be the subject of considerable thought and research, to present you at your best and maximize your chances of admission to the most selective universities and courses.

When should you start writing it?

For non-native English speakers with limited knowledge or experience of the subject(s) they plan to study at university, this can be a particularly difficult exercise. Even if your English is perfect, a personal statement is likely to contain errors, incomplete ideas or an insufficient number of resources. So it’s essential to have enough time to refine it and have it reviewed by several people before submitting it. That’s why it’s important to start writing your statement and give yourself several weeks, ideally even several months, to write it. The summer before you start your senior year, for example, could be the ideal time to write your personal statement, alongside your vacations, courses and other activities.

What should my personal statement ?

Visit personal statementmust explain why you would be the ideal candidate for the course selected. This statement is common to all five programs you’ll be applying to. For this reason, it is important to avoid mentioning any one university in particular! For example, you can describe elements of the curriculum that particularly interest you and explain why, but absolutely avoid going into too much detail about a specific curriculum or mentioning the name of a particular professor or university.

Example of a sentence to ban : I look forward to Professor Smith’s class on British History at the LSE (a phrase that refers specifically to one university and one professor, whereas the dossier is common to five universities).

In addition, it’s important to mention at least two or three resources (books, lectures, documentaries, podcasts, blogs) that you’ve consulted outside the classroom and that are relevant to your intended course of study. Books are particularly important to mention. So you should start cultivating your interest in the subjects you want to study at university as early as possible!

• Its maximum length is 4,000 characters and 47 lines.
• The golden rule is to “show, not tell”.
• It should demonstrate your interest in the course through examples of readings, lectures, experiences and activities carried out in recent years, by example : « Reading “X” by X has taught me… The author’s theory on X was particularly inspiring as it shows that… »
• It must not be descriptive: you must clearly express your point of view., par exemple : « While I agree with X’s view that…, I believe that Y’s theory provides a better framework to understand… »
• It must prove that you have the academic potential to succeed in this course of study through the subjects you have already studied in high school and your extracurricular experience (general competitions, etc.)., summer schools…), par exemple : « Studying mathematics at the highest level in high school has prepared me well to develop strong analytical skills that will allow me to succeed in the rigorous academic curriculum… »
• It should mention some of the transferable skills you have developed through your internships, experiences and activities that will be useful to you in this course, for example : « My role as captain of the basketball team for the last four years has allowed me to develop my leadership skills and to work well in a team… »
• It should be authentic and personal, and avoid quotations.
• It needs to be researched and rewritten until it’s truly complete.
• 80 % of your personal statement must cover your academic interest and only 20% on your extracurricular activities.

What structure does personal statement must respect ?

Yourpersonal statement should more or less follow the structure below:

• introduction (about 6 lines) ;
• academic interest in the subject (22-30 lines) ;
• extracurricular activities (6-10 lines) ;
• conclusion (2-4 lines)

All in all, your personal statement must not exceed 47 lines or 4,000 characters.
