LBS Score Requirements 2026: GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE Benchmarks

LBS Score Requirements 2026

Standardized test scores are a critical component of your London Business School application. While LBS does not publish strict minimum scores, understanding the competitive ranges for GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, and IELTS will help you set realistic targets and gauge your competitiveness.

GMAT Benchmarks by Program

MBA GMAT Score Requirements

Score RangePercentileCompetitiveness LevelNotes
700+88-99Highly CompetitiveStrengthens profile significantly; average score for admitted applicants
680-69982-88CompetitiveGood chance of consideration; solid foundation
650-67973-82Moderately CompetitiveMinimum threshold; other components must be strong
620-64960-73WeakDifficult without exceptional background
Below 620Below 60Very WeakSignificant disadvantage; consider retake

LBS MBA GMAT Facts:
• Average GMAT: 710
• Typical Range: 600-780
• Median Score: ~710
• 25th Percentile: ~650
• 75th Percentile: ~750

The average GMAT score of 710 reflects the caliber of admitted students. However, LBS admits students across the entire score range. A score below 700 is not disqualifying if other components of your application (work experience, essays, recommendations) are exceptionally strong. Conversely, a high GMAT score does not guarantee admission if your background is weak.

Master in Management GMAT Score Requirements

Score RangePercentileCompetitiveness LevelNotes
690+85-99Highly CompetitiveAverage for admitted applicants; stronger profile
670-68978-85CompetitiveGood positioning for MiM program
640-66967-78Moderately CompetitiveAcceptable for consideration; other strengths important
610-63955-67WeakBelow typical range; strong background may help
Below 610Below 55Very WeakSignificant disadvantage for this program

LBS MiM GMAT Facts:
• Average GMAT: 690+
• Typical Range: 600-770
• Competitive Range: 670+
• Program focuses on recent graduates with limited experience

The Master in Management attracts recent graduates transitioning into management roles. GMAT scores are slightly lower on average compared to MBA, but strong scores still differentiate your application in this competitive program.

GRE Alternative to GMAT

GRE Score RangeEquivalent GMATCompetitiveness for MBACompetitiveness for MiM
325-340710-790Highly CompetitiveHighly Competitive
315-324650-709CompetitiveCompetitive
305-314600-649Moderately CompetitiveModerately Competitive
295-304550-599WeakWeak
Below 295Below 550Very WeakVery Weak

LBS fully accepts the GRE as an alternative to the GMAT. The school converts GRE scores to equivalent GMAT scores for evaluation purposes. If you are stronger in the GRE format or have already taken the GRE, submitting GRE scores is perfectly acceptable and will not disadvantage your application. Focus on achieving the highest score possible in your chosen test format.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

For non-native English speakers, LBS requires demonstration of English language proficiency through standardized tests. These requirements apply to applicants whose undergraduate education was not conducted in English.

TOEFL Score Requirements

TOEFL ScoreSection Breakdown (Est.)CompetitivenessNotes
120 (Maximum)30/30 all sectionsExceptionalNative-level English proficiency demonstrated
110-11927-29 per sectionExcellentWell above requirement; strong English foundation
105-10926-27 per sectionMeets RequirementMinimum acceptable for LBS; meets standard
100-10424-25 per sectionBelow RequirementNot accepted; consider retake or IELTS
Below 100Below 24 per sectionUnacceptableDoes not meet requirements; retake required

LBS TOEFL Requirements:
• Minimum Required: 105
• Recommended: 110+
• No section-specific minimums (all sections weighted equally in overall score)
• Test Format: Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)

A TOEFL score of 105 is the minimum acceptable threshold for LBS MBA and most other programs. While you could technically meet requirements at 105, scores of 110+ strengthen your application and demonstrate your ability to succeed in an English-taught program. The iBT TOEFL is scored on a scale of 0-120, with most candidates scoring above 100.

IELTS Score Requirements

IELTS BandScore RangeCompetitivenessNotes
8.0-9.0Very HighExceptionalNear-native proficiency; well above requirement
7.5-7.9HighMeets/Exceeds RequirementMinimum requirement; demonstrates strong English
7.0-7.4GoodBelow RequirementNot accepted; consider retake or TOEFL
6.5-6.9SatisfactoryBelow RequirementDoes not meet LBS standard
Below 6.5Acceptable to LimitedUnacceptableDoes not meet requirements; retake required

LBS IELTS Requirements:
• Minimum Required: 7.5
• Recommended: 8.0+
• Test Format: Academic IELTS (not General Training)
• Must achieve 7.5 or higher (cannot have bands below 7.0)

For IELTS, the minimum requirement is 7.5 overall band score. The Academic IELTS (not General Training) is the version LBS accepts. IELTS is scored on a scale of 1.0-9.0 in 0.5-point increments. Unlike TOEFL, some IELTS programs may require minimum scores in individual sections (reading, writing, listening, speaking), though LBS focuses on overall band score.

TOEFL vs. IELTS: Which Should You Take?

Choose TOEFL if:
• You prefer computer-based testing
• You are stronger with multiple-choice questions
• You want to test multiple times for score improvement
• You prefer a listening component with American English accents

Choose IELTS if:
• You prefer speaking with a human examiner
• You are stronger with essay writing assessment
• You are familiar with British English pronunciation
• You want a more conversational speaking component

Both tests are equally accepted at LBS. Choose the format where you believe you will score highest. Many test-takers find the IELTS speaking component more comfortable due to one-on-one conversation with an examiner, while others prefer the TOEFL computer-based format.

Master in Finance GMAT Score Guidance

The Master in Finance program attracts candidates with strong quantitative backgrounds. While specific GMAT benchmarks are less publicized than MBA/MiM, competitive applicants typically score 680+. Quantitative performance (GMAT Quant section: 45+) is particularly important for this program, as it demonstrates capability in rigorous financial coursework.

Score Improvement Strategy

How Many Times Should You Take the GMAT?

Most successful applicants take the GMAT once or twice. Taking the test multiple times can signal to admissions committees that you lack test-taking skills, though all schools including LBS will use your highest score. Recommendations:

Strategy by Initial Score:
• 700+: Submit immediately; retake only if you believe you can score significantly higher
• 680-699: Consider a retake if you have time and identify clear improvement areas
• 650-679: A retake is advisable to strengthen competitiveness
• Below 650: Multiple retakes may be necessary; focus on dedicated preparation

Start GMAT preparation 3-4 months before your target application round. If your first attempt yields a score below your target, take 4-6 weeks to focus on weak areas before retaking. The GMAT can be retaken every 16 days, but rushing into retakes without focused preparation rarely yields significant improvements.

Interpreting Your Scores

Remember that a standardized test score is just one component of your application. LBS evaluates applications holistically. Strong scores combined with:

• Solid academic background (3.0+ GPA)
• Meaningful work experience with clear progression
• Compelling essays demonstrating motivation and fit
• Strong recommendation letters
• Evidence of leadership and impact

…create a winning application. Conversely, high test scores cannot compensate for weak work experience or unconvincing essays. Focus on building strength across all components of your application.
