What you need to successfully apply to Cambridge

Academic Requirements

  • A-Levels: A*AA minimum (typically A*A*A for most courses)
  • International Baccalaureate: 40-42 points
  • GPA: 3.9+ for US applicants

English Language

  • IELTS: 7.0-7.5 overall
  • TOEFL iBT: 100+ points
  • Cambridge: Grade A (190+)

Is getting into Cambridge harder than Oxford?
Both are exceptionally competitive with Cambridge at 21% and Oxford at 17% acceptance rates. The difficulty varies by programme. Both require exceptionally strong academics (A*A*A or A*AA) and excellent test performance. The competition levels are comparable overall.
Do all Cambridge programmes require STEP?
No. STEP is primarily required for Mathematics and Physics. Other subjects may require different tests like TMUA (Mathematics-heavy courses), ESAT (Engineering), or subject-specific assessments. Check your college’s specific requirements.
What is the Cambridge college system?
Cambridge has 31 colleges, each with its own identity and traditions. You apply to both Cambridge and a specific college. The college provides accommodation, social life, and supervision tutorials while the university handles lectures and examinations. Colleges are integral to the Cambridge experience.
How many interviews will I have?
Typically 2-3 interviews. You’ll usually have interviews with your college, and sometimes with another college as well. Each interview typically lasts 20-30 minutes and focuses on your subject knowledge and academic thinking.
Can I change my college choice after submitting my application?
Once you submit your UCAS application, you cannot change your college choice. This is why researching colleges thoroughly before applying is crucial. Each college has different strengths, facilities, and traditions to consider.
